Libraries should attempt to verify all interlibrary loan requests before the requests are sent. Verification confirms or corrects all bibliographic information needed to locate and loan the material. Verification must be done to confirm the actual existence of an item by locating it in a standard reference or bibliographic source and to provide complete, accurate bibliographic data for the lending library to use in locating the item.
The verified bibliographic information is entered on the ILL form along with a complete citation to the verification source. While standard sources for verification can be abbreviated, it is best to write out the complete citation for most verification sources. For definition purposes, a bibliographic citation may be a written reference to a specific work or portion of a work (book, article, dissertation, report, musical composition, etc.) by a particular author, editor, composer, etc., which clearly identifies the document in which the work can be found. Citation format varies from one field of study to another but includes at a minimum author, title, and publication date. Any reference book, index, or bibliography may be cited for verification although standard, basic sources of bibliographic data are preferred since most libraries have these standard sources if it becomes necessary to re-verify the request.
Among the standard tools that can be used for locating bibliographic data for books are:
|*American Book Publishing Record||(ABPR)|
|*Books in Print||(BIP)|
|Library of Congress||(LOC)|
|National Union Catalog||(NUC)|
|* Online Computer Library Center||(OCLC)|
*Polaris - Nevada Library Cooperative (CoOp)
*University of Nevada, Reno (UNR)
*University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV)
*Las Vegas-Clark County Library District (LVCCLD)
*Washoe County Library (WCL)
*preferred verification tools
Periodical articles must also be verified whenever possible. Full text access should be checked via statewide databases as well. Among the standard tools that can be used for verifying/locating bibliographic data for article/serial titles are:
Biography Index (Biog I)
Citations to verification sources should include the information needed to locate the entry, such as the name of the source, date, volume, page number and cost, if given.
Example: OCLC 2015-16, 4:285 COST: $45.00
If the request is to be sent to NSLAPR, the verification should be written on the request, or proper information attached.
