The Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) System is a numerical classification system developed by the U.S. government to categorize industries by their primary business activities. It was designed to promote uniformity and comparability in the presentation of statistical data related to business and industry.
Each industry is assigned a unique four-digit SIC code, the first two digits represent the major industry group, the third identifies the industry group, and the fourth specifies the particular industry. This resource allows the user to search the 1987 version of the SIC manual by keyword, to access descriptive information for the specified SIC number and to examine the manual structure.
