NSLAPR Announces Major Updates to the Local Government Records Retention Schedule

The Nevada State Library, Archives & Public Records (NSLAPR) State Records Program (SRP) has initiated Project 1160, an initiative to update the Local Government Records Retention Schedule. This project aims to improve the efficiency, clarity, and accessibility of public records management for local government entities across Nevada.

Key Project Objectives:

  • Simplified Records Management: Streamlining and consolidating records series, eliminating unnecessary information, and adopting clear categorization and retention methods such as "Destroy," "Destroy Securely," or "Permanent."
  • Enhanced User Experience: Reformatting the schedules for easier use by integrating retention codes and moving legal citations at the end of each records series description.

Project Timeline

Phase 1 (October 2024 – November 2024)
In this phase, the SRP will consolidate functional sections, simplify disposition language, and reorganize records series for improved clarity and efficiency. A draft version of the updated retention schedules will be available for review by local government entities in November 2024, with a feedback period continuing through June 2025.

Phase 2 (November 2024 – December 2025)
This phase will focus on reviewing the feedback provided by local governments, refining schedules further by updating descriptive language, and submitting the final draft to the NSLAPR Administrator for approval. Final approval and publication of the new retention schedules are expected by January 2026.

Phase 3 (Ongoing from January 2026)
Once implemented, the updated schedules will undergo continuous review every two years to ensure they remain current with legislative updates and best practices. Local government entities will be encouraged to provide feedback throughout the process, ensuring the retention schedules continue to meet their evolving needs.

Participation and Feedback

Local government entities are encouraged to participate actively in this review process. If you have current suggestions or feedback on how the retention schedules can better serve your needs, we welcome your input throughout the entire project timeline.
