About
NSLAPR purchased Memory Care Kits for Nevada public libraries as part of our new LSTA funded Adult Services Initiative, in order to support public libraries in their efforts to meet the evolving informational needs of older community members.
- Memory Care Kits are designed to be used with individuals who are experiencing memory loss or other cognitive issues related to dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and other memory disorders. They’re also great for anyone who wants to improve their short-term memory and overall mental speed.
- Each kit contains a collection of engaging items based on a specific theme, such as gardening, travel, space, and others. Each kit includes a book and three or four activities—puzzles, card games, etc.—that spark conversation and stimulate brain activity.
- The activities encourage multi-generational participation and would be something that families, friends, and/or neighbors can complete together.
- Memory Care Kits are geared towards older adults and those with cognitive disabilities, but can be used by anyone.
Outcomes
Memory Care Kits are designed to:
- improve memory and cognition
- build social skills
- improve short-term memory
- spark conversation
- support calmness of the mind
As Memory Care Kits are intended to stimulate brain activity, all patrons who borrow and use the kits should benefit from a boost to brain functions that occur while using the kits. However, measuring the degree and type of benefit is outside of the scope and expertise of this project and of participating library staff.
Kit Allocations
Kits will be distributed to Nevada public libraries who opt-in to project participation.
- Participation is not mandatory.
- Kit allocations will be based on service population, as reported on the 2022 PLS.
- Each library entity who opts to participate will receive a base number of:
- 9 kits, plus
- 1 additional kit per 15,000 residents, plus
- additional kits per branch (if funding permits)
Reporting
Final reports will be available September 2024.
The Memory Care Kit Initiative is funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the Nevada State Library, Archives and Public Records.
