Summer Programming

CSLP

Summer reading and learning programs at public libraries encourages children, youth, and families to read and help children maintain reading skills. To support summer programming, NSLAPR is a member of the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP), a grassroots consortium of states and member affiliates working together to choose a theme, create artwork, and provide high-quality summer reading programming materials for public libraries.

  • NSLAPR purchased 2025 CSLP manuals in print, USB, or online formats for libraries who opted in. The online access codes have been sent to libraries.

CSLP Volunteering and Committee Work

Committees are the lifeblood of CSLP. Volunteering for a CSLP Committee is a great opportunity to develop professionally while also contributing to the CSLP mission. Volunteers have a significant positive impact on the organization and programs. While the duties vary, committee obligations generally run for one calendar year. All committee work is done virtually, either through email, phone, or online meetings.

Summer reading projects are funded by a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Statewide Youth Services grant, provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by the Nevada State Library, Archives and Public Records.

Beyond Summer Programming

Programming To Infinity and Beyond

Ever find yourself in need of a ready-made programming solution? Maybe you're planning an event series that would be enhanced by a coordinated theme? Or, perhaps you have a new staff member who would benefit from a treasure trove of ideas and a bank of planning guides? Or possibly... you just need additional inspiration? Whatever the case, remember that through your affiliation with the Nevada State Library, Archives and Public Records—a Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) member library—you can use the CSLP program manuals beyond summer.

In fact, CSLP encourages libraries to retain materials for future use. This includes incorporating past programming materials into winter reading programs, everyday storytimes, and library events. For more information, visit the Rules of Use page on the CSLP website.

Smokey Bear 2024 Reading Challenge

The USDA Forest Service is inviting Nevada public libraries to partner on a free reading program, to celebrate Smokey Bear’s 80th Birthday year in 2024. This challenge, available through the online Beanstack platform and a printable challenge paper log, will engage youth in reading about wildfire prevention, forests, and natural resource careers while they explore their local environment. The challenge is designed to complement the 2024 Summer Reading Program theme of “Adventure Begins at Your Library.”

Libraries are welcome to run the Smokey Bear reading challenge anytime from January 1st to November 28th, 2024 (Smokey’s birthdate is August 9, 2024) although incentive items will not be available until mid January.

A special thank you to the Georgia Public Library System for helping develop this program.
