The Research Room is open to the public:

Monday to Friday, 10:00am-2:00pm
Excluding State Holidays

Please call 775-684-3310 to make an appointment outside our open hours:

Monday to Friday, 8:00am-10:00am & 2:00pm-5:00pm

No appointments are needed from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM 

Research Room Policy

The Nevada State Archives follows the statutory provisions requiring public access to records in its custody.  (NRS Chapter 239 Public Records and NRS 378.070)

Researchers are expected to follow instructions as provided by staff members. Behavior that obstructs others’ use of the facilities or the staff’s ability to perform their duties is not permitted. Patrons who are consistently uncooperative may be asked to leave the premises.


Registration for use of the Nevada State Archives Research Room

  • Registration is required by all researchers wishing to use the Archives Research
  • Researchers between the ages of 13 and 16 are permitted to use the materials if supervised by an adult.
  • One adult per juvenile researcher is required.
  • Children aged 12 and under are not admitted unless they are participating in escorted group tours or presentations.

Use of the Archives Research Room

  • The Archives Research Room is reserved for researchers who are actively using the materials.
  • All materials will be collected by staff 10 minutes prior to closing.
  • Patrons are responsible for their personal belongings at all times.

Handling Materials in the Nevada State Archives Research Room

  • Item placement instructions will vary due to format preservation, and security concerns.
  • Pens are not permitted.  Pencils are available if needed.
  • One folder may be out of a box at a time and the designated marker must be inserted as a place holder.
  • Materials must remain in the existing order.  If an error is thought to exist, notify a staff member.
  • Photographic materials must be examined using the provided gloves.
  • Taking photographs of photographic materials is prohibited.
  • Archives staff will make any photocopies requested and will follow any copyright restrictions.

Personal Materials

The following may be brought into the Archives Research Room:

  • Personal computing devices
  • Cameras, flash disabled
  • Cell phones, silenced

General Use of the Archives Research Room

  • Patrons are responsible for their personal belongings at all times.
  • Eating and drinking is not permitted in the Archives Research Room.
  • Public restrooms are available on the upper floor to the left of the research room.
  • Sleeping is not permitted.
  • Non-flash photography of materials is permitted.
  • Materials must always be fully supported. 
  • Do not lean against, mark, fold, trace, or handle materials in any way that may result in damage.
